چکیده
ABSTRACT We use spatially resolved spectroscopy of a distant giant gravitational arc to test orientation effects on Mg ii absorption equivalent width (EW) and covering fraction (???) in the circumgalactic medium foreground star-forming galaxy (G1) at z ? 0.77. Forty-two spatially-binned positions uniformly sample impact parameters (D) G1 between 10 30 kpc azimuthal angles ? 30° 90° (minor axis). find an EW-D anticorrelation, akin that observed statistically quasar absorber studies, apparent correlation both EW ??? with ?, revealing non-isotropic gas distribution. In line our previous results kinematics suggesting presence outflows G1, minimum simple 3D static double-cone model (to represent trace bipolar outflows) is required recreate spatial The D values probed by cannot confirm disc, but data highly disfavour disc alone. Our support interpretation EW-? using other extant probes partly shaped metal-rich winds.

Enormous disc of cool gas surrounding the nearby powerful radio galaxy NGC 612 ( PKS 0131 - 36 )
We present the detection of an enormous disc of cool neutral hydrogen (H I) gas surrounding the S0 galaxy NGC 612, which hosts one of the nearest powerful radio sources (PKS 0131-36). Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we detect MHI = 1.8 × 10 9M⊙ of H I emission-line gas that is distributed in a 140 kpc wide disc-like structure along the optical disc and dust-lane of NGC 612. The bul...
متن کاملGalaxies Probing Galaxies: Cool Halo Gas from a Z = 0.47 Post-starburst Galaxy
We study the cool gas around a galaxy at z = 0.4729 using Keck/LRIS spectroscopy of a bright (B = 21.7) background galaxy at z = 0.6942 at a transverse distance of 16.5 h 70 kpc. The background galaxy spectrum reveals strong Fe II, Mg II, Mg I, and Ca II absorption at the redshift of the foreground galaxy, with a Mg II λ2796 rest equivalent width of 3.93± 0.08 Å, indicative of a velocity width ...
متن کاملEffects of shielding gas compositions on arc plasma and metal transfer in gas metal arc welding
This article presents the effects of shielding gas compositions on the transient transport phenomena, including the distributions of temperature, flow velocity, current density, and electromagnetic force in the arc and the metal, and arc pressure in gas metal arc welding of mild steel at a constant current input. The shielding gas considered includes pure argon, 75% Ar, 50% Ar, and 25% Ar with ...
متن کاملRealistic simulations of gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters: extracting arc parameters from mock DUNE images
Aims. We present a newly developed code that allows simulations of optical observations of galaxy fields with a variety of instruments. The code incorporates gravitational lensing effects and is targetted at simulating lensing by galaxy clusters. Our goal is to create the tools required for comparing theoretical expectations with observations to obtain a better understanding of how observationa...
متن کاملA further discussion on quasar-galaxy associations from gravitational lensing
Quasar-galaxy associations, if they result from the effect of gravitational lensing by foreground galaxies, depend sensitively on the shape of the quasar number counts. Two kinds of quasar number-magnitude relations are predicted to produce quite different properties in quasar-galaxy associations: the counts of Boyle, Shanks and Peterson (1988; BSP) provide both positive and “negative” associat...
